The mother of a 23-year-old man who died in a car crash in Delhi’s Dwarka on February 3 claims that a 17-year-old was filming social media reels while driving a Scorpio SUV, leading to the fatal collision. Sahil Dhaneshra lost his life after the SUV, allegedly driven by the minor without a license, collided head-on with his motorcycle near Lal Bahadur Shastri College. The impact also caused a collision with a parked cab, injuring its driver severely.
The accused, lacking a driving license, was apprehended and presented before the Juvenile Justice Board, which then sent him to an observation home. He was later granted interim bail on February 10 to attend his Class 10 board exams. Sahil’s mother, Inna Makan, expressed concerns about the case’s handling and called for accountability from the authorities.
Makan alleged that the minor and his sister were recording videos while driving at high speed, creating social media content. She criticized the legal proceedings, questioning the absence of the minor’s father in a juvenile case where parental responsibility is crucial. According to Makan, the driver was preoccupied with filming reels and did not apply the brakes even after the initial collision, causing extensive damage and severe injuries to a nearby taxi driver.
Delhi Police confirmed the accused’s age as 17, initially considering trying him as an adult before verifying his minor status through submitted identification documents. The minor’s father, briefly detained during the investigation, is expected to be named in the chargesheet under relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. A case has been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, with ongoing investigations and mechanical inspections of the vehicles involved.
At the crash site, the Scorpio, motorcycle, and cab were severely damaged, resulting in Sahil’s death and the serious injury of the cab driver, Ajit Singh. Singh, recounting the incident, described the sequence of collisions that led to his injuries and hospitalization. Investigators confirmed that the minor was driving the Scorpio without a valid license, leading to the seizure of all three vehicles for further examination and collection of CCTV footage for the ongoing probe.
