Five-time champions Mumbai Indians will kick off their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season against three-time winner Kolkata Knight Riders at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Mumbai Indians, tied with Chennai Super Kings as the most successful IPL team, clinched their fifth title in 2020 but have faced challenges in reaching the final since then. Despite a transition period, they made it to the Playoffs in IPL 2025 but fell short of the title once again.
For the upcoming season, Mumbai Indians have retained key players like skipper Hardik Pandya, former captain Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah. They have also added strength to their squad by bringing back Trent Boult and Shardul Thakur. Quinton de Kock’s return is expected to bolster the team’s opening partnership with Rohit Sharma.
Suryakumar Yadav will lead the middle-order after a successful 2025 season, supported by players like Ryan Rickleton, Tilak Varma, and Sherfane Rutherford. Boult’s comeback will enhance the bowling attack, but Bumrah’s initial unavailability and the lack of support for spinner Mitchell Santner are concerns for the team.
Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other hand, have undergone significant changes after finishing eighth in the previous edition. Releasing 10 players, including key figures like Andre Russell and Venkatesh Iyer, they have brought in new talents like Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Rachin Ravindra. The team’s bowling attack has been reinforced with the addition of Blessing Muzarabani.
While Mumbai Indians have a historical advantage over Kolkata Knight Riders in head-to-head encounters, KKR has shown recent dominance, winning four of their last six matches. Despite Mumbai’s slow starts, KKR remains hopeful for the opening match of the season.
