Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has officially initiated the digitization of old manual birth and death certificates, a significant move towards modernizing vital records management in the state. This initiative aims to enhance service delivery efficiency, ensure accurate data management, and improve citizens’ access to essential documents. The digitization process is also expected to assist the government in making well-informed public policy decisions.
In line with the Registrar General of India’s directive under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Nagaland government introduced online registration of births and deaths in April 2022. The ongoing digitization of old manual records seeks to seamlessly integrate historical data into the online system, ensuring authenticity, security, and long-term accessibility. As part of this transition, manual certificate issuance will be phased out, with the state shifting entirely to online registration and digitization, aiming to reduce paperwork and offer faster, more reliable services to the public.
Officials have emphasized that only genuine certificates issued by authorized registrars and backed by official records will undergo digitization. The Department of Economics and Statistics has encouraged the public to utilize the RGI portal to contribute to building a comprehensive and secure database of vital records for Nagaland. The launch event, held at the Chief Minister’s office in Kohima, was attended by key officials, including Akunu S. Meyase, Secretary to the government of Nagaland, and Neidilhou Keditsu, Director of Economics and Statistics.
