Sri Lankan Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa highlighted the crucial role of India in maintaining peace and stability in South Asia. Rajapaksa stressed the need for enhanced regional cooperation in the face of recent global security developments. He underlined the importance of countering extremism, preventing political violence, and protecting minority rights through collective efforts in South Asia.
Rajapaksa pointed out that countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka have faced political turmoil, urging for unity to address shared challenges. He emphasized that India’s leadership is pivotal for ensuring long-term peace and stability in the region. Additionally, he expressed optimism about the upcoming elections in Bangladesh and Nepal as opportunities to strengthen regional security through democratic processes.
In related developments, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Colombo, meeting with Sri Lankan officials to extend support after Cyclone Ditwah. Jaishankar announced a USD 450 million reconstruction package for Sri Lanka, focusing on infrastructure rehabilitation, housing construction, and assistance to sectors affected by the cyclone. The minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to aiding Sri Lanka’s recovery post-disaster.
During his visit, Jaishankar also met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and various ministers to discuss further support for the country’s rebuilding efforts. He reiterated India’s full backing for Sri Lanka’s recovery and emphasized the strong bond between the two nations.
