United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Artemis II astronauts have shared breathtaking images of Earth as they neared the moon. Commander Reid Wiseman’s photo displayed a curved view of Earth through the Orion capsule’s window, showcasing the globe with oceans adorned by white clouds and a luminous green aurora, as confirmed by NASA. This marks the first astronaut moonshot in over fifty years, as per various reports.
The images taken by the Artemis II crew offer a glimpse of human activity through the electric lights on Earth. NASA described the photos, noting the sunlight illuminating the planet’s limb in one of the images. The differing shutter speeds used in the photos captured Earth’s daytime and nighttime glow distinctly.
A photo highlighting the boundary between day and night on Earth, known as the terminator, was also shared. NASA’s caption for this photo emphasized the unity of humanity on the planet, whether awake or dreaming. Lakiesha Hawkins, an exploration systems leader, expressed her pride in the mission’s progress, noting the representation of all individuals on Earth in the images.
The NASA crew, positioned over 180,000 kilometers from Earth as of late Friday, is set to cover another 240,000 kilometers to enter near-moon orbit, likely by Monday. Comprising three Americans and one Canadian, the team plans to orbit the moon in their Orion capsule, execute a U-turn, and return directly to Earth without landing. This mission marks the first human voyage to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.
