NCP leader Rupali Chakankar has resigned as the President of the Maharashtra NCP women’s wing following her involvement in the Captain Ashok Kharat controversy. Chakankar had earlier stepped down as the chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission amid opposition demands but had retained her position in the state NCP women’s wing.
In a statement, Chakankar clarified her stance on the Kharat case, emphasizing the need for a transparent and impartial investigation. She expressed her resignation to the NCP national president and state Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, citing the ongoing false allegations and the need for truth to prevail.
Chakankar faced criticism from various political parties and within the NCP due to her alleged connections with Ashok Kharat, who is under investigation for multiple offenses including sexual harassment and rape. The pressure for her resignation intensified after a video emerged showing her in a respectful position towards Kharat.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had instructed Chakankar to resign promptly, a directive that was followed by her resignation from the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission. The controversy surrounding Chakankar escalated after the police seized a pen drive containing private video recordings of individuals, further complicating the situation.
