New Zealand has relaxed its immigration policy, making it easier for partners of international students to obtain work visas. The updated policy, effective from June 21, 2024, allows partners of students enrolled in specific higher education programmes to apply for open work visas. This change aims to attract more international students, especially in fields with skill shortages like nursing and engineering.

New Zealand Immigration announced updates to the Green List, including Bachelor degrees and Bachelor Honors qualifications leading to registration-required occupations. Polly Vowels, Manager of Immigration (Skills and Residence) Policy at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), explained that the new policy aligns with the goal of supporting partners of students pursuing qualifications for Green List professions.

Celia Coombes, acting director of Visa-Students at Immigration New Zealand, elaborated on the specifics. Partners of eligible students receive open work visas, allowing them to work for any employer without needing an employment offer at the application stage. Coombes also discussed the Dependent Child Student Visa, emphasizing that dependent children must pay international fees if attending tertiary education.

Linda Sissons, acting chief executive of Education New Zealand, praised the policy, noting that over 69,000 international students are currently enrolled in New Zealand. She highlighted the country’s attractiveness as a study destination, offering quality education and a safe, welcoming environment. China, India, and Japan remain the top three countries sending students to New Zealand.
