NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) have signed a Joint Letter of Intent (JLoI) to create joint innovation programs for countries in the Global South. The signing ceremony at NITI Aayog marks a significant step in global cooperation on innovation, entrepreneurship, and intellectual property (IP).

Dharmendra Pradhan, India’s Cabinet Minister for Education and Skill Development, attended the event, alongside NITI Aayog’s Vice Chairperson Suman Bery, Dr. V.K. Saraswat, and Dr. Chintan Vaishnav. Pradhan expressed his enthusiasm about India’s growing influence in the global innovation space and the potential of this partnership to enhance global understanding of IP rights and drive inclusive economic growth.

Sherif Saadallah, Executive Director of WIPO Academy, emphasized the role of intellectual property in fostering innovation and creativity, particularly among youth. He noted that this partnership reflects WIPO’s commitment to creating a more inclusive global IP ecosystem.

The agreement follows WIPO Director General Daren Tang’s earlier visit to the AIM ecosystem and his recognition of the effectiveness of Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) and Atal Incubation Centers (AICs). This collaboration aims to leverage these models to benefit other nations and advance IP-led innovation.

Vice Chairperson Suman Bery and NITI Aayog members highlighted the partnership’s strategic importance in enhancing India’s global competitiveness and attracting international investments. The WIPO delegation, currently visiting India, will also engage with students and industry experts during their stay.
