The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has made significant strides in railway electrification during the fiscal year 2025–26, covering key sections in Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh. This progress marks a crucial advancement towards sustainable and modern rail operations in the region, enhancing connectivity and reducing reliance on traditional fuel-based systems. The electrification initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ vision for complete electrification to boost operational efficiency and increase train handling capacity.
During FY 2025–26, NFR completed electrification over 1,342.18 route kilometres (RKM) and 1,828.42 track kilometres (TKM) across its jurisdiction, encompassing vital areas in Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh. This extensive electrification has significantly improved rail connectivity in the Northeast and neighboring regions, facilitating seamless electric traction operations. Notably, all divisions of NFR have made substantial progress.
Tinsukia (TSK) Division in Assam emerged as a top performer, electrifying 663.59 RKM and 855.48 TKM, accounting for nearly half of the total electrification undertaken. Key sections like Mariani–Simaluguri and Simaluguri–Dibrugarh have been electrified, crucial for passenger and freight movement in Upper Assam. Rangiya (RNY) Division in Assam followed with 348.92 RKM and 535.43 TKM progress, enhancing connectivity to Arunachal Pradesh.
Lumding (LMG) Division electrified 124.70 RKM and 197.38 TKM, including the significant Agartala–Sabroom section in Tripura, boosting connectivity in the southern part of the Northeast. Katihar (KIR) Division in Bihar achieved electrification of 108.62 RKM and 130.83 TKM, while Alipurduar (APDJ) Division in West Bengal contributed 96.36 RKM and 109.30 TKM, covering important sections in Bihar and north Bengal. These electrification efforts aim to expedite train operations, reduce fossil fuel dependency, lower maintenance costs, and enhance environmental sustainability.
With these accomplishments, Northeast Frontier Railway has electrified around 4,170.19 route kilometres and 6,690.38 track kilometres to date. NFR remains dedicated to completing electrification works across its entire zone, supporting Indian Railways’ goal of achieving 100% electrification of its broad-gauge network.
