An old shell was found in J&K’s Poonch district by security forces and was safely disposed of. The shell was discovered in the Mendhar area of Poonch. Residents in the Upper Ghani area of the Mankote sector spotted the shell, leading to the police and army being informed for proper handling.
No damage or injuries were reported during the disposal operation. The situation was managed smoothly without any concerns. Multiple unexploded shells have been located in civilian areas of Rajouri and Poonch districts following unprovoked shelling by Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC) after Operation Sindoor.
Poonch district witnessed the highest casualties, with 20 out of 27 fatalities and over 50 injuries since May last year. This surge in incidents occurred after India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructures in Pakistan and PoJK. The army personnel involved in clearing unexploded shells have highlighted that the Pakistani shelling hit civilian areas contradicting claims of only military targets being attacked.
In May 2024, the army and Jammu and Kashmir Police safely disposed of 42 unexploded artillery shells fired by Pakistani forces during cross-border shelling in Poonch.
