More than 2,000 food samples were gathered in Ahmedabad during the initial quarter of 2026, leading to the identification of 74 samples as substandard. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s food department conducted this sampling under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Out of the samples collected, various food categories were tested, including paneer, milk, milk products, mango milkshake, bakery products, sweets, namkeen, sugar-boiled confectionery, flours, grains, edible oil, beverages, sugar, spices, iodised salt, and others. Additionally, during this period, 4,294 food business units were inspected, resulting in the issuance of 1,411 notices.
Authorities reported the destruction of approximately 3,081 kg of unsafe food, the recovery of Rs 22,42,300 in administrative charges, and the conduct of 1,033 TPC tests. Notably, a specific focus was placed on the quality of paneer, with penalties exceeding Rs three lakh imposed on units found using analogue paneer instead of milk paneer.
