Mumbai, July 5 (IANS) After 20 years, estranged brothers Uddhav and Raj Thackeray reunited on the politically sensitive issue of Marathi pride, language, Marathi Manoos and united Maharashtra with a call to continue unity in future too. They also dropped hints that their handshake was not restricted to oppose imposition of Hindi along with Marathi and English from grade one but also to together contest the ensuing BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation to keep the BJP-led MahaYuti at bay. At the joint victory rally today the bonhomie, affection and respect for each other was visible between the two brothers with BJP as a common target. However, Uddhav Thackeray, who heads the Shiv Sena-UBT and Raj Thackeray, who is founder of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), face acid test of actually working together and stay politically relevant in a serious bid to take on the mighty BJP. They will have to address various issues including personal egos, leadership hierarchy, seat adjustment and above all power sharing before announcing a formal alliance between the two ahead of crucial election to the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). In addition, both realise that they cannot win BMC elections exclusively banking on the support of Marathi Manoos especially when BJP has not only made sufficient inroads in their Marathi vote bank but consolidated it’s position in non Marathi votes including people from states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar who are settled in Mumbai. Thackeray brothers will have to go extra mile for reaching out to non Marathi speaking voters too without resorting to violence but only through special outreach drive. They will have to provide a development model which will further benefit the Marathi Manoos by making him a respectable stakeholder in the development. On its part, BJP will see that no stone will leave unturned to please Marathi Manoos as well as non Marathi voters selling them “Vikas” (development) plank and their betterment after voted to power in BMC. Although Thackeray brothers said that the unity of Marathi people shown during the Samyukta Maharashtra movement forced the government to withdraw decision on imposition of Hindi, they called upon the Shiv Sainiks and Mansainiks to remain alert and vigilant to foil BJP’s attempt also to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra and reduce Maharashtra’s importance in future. The protection of interests of Marathi Manoos was at the center-stage as both Thackerays cited their union was also to together checkmate BJP’s game plan also of engineering division among them and also dividing based on caste. “Everyone who is here has forgotten the party division for Marathi. One thing is clear: we have removed the distance between us. We have come together, we will stay together,” Uddhav Thackeray announced. “Mumbai was our right, we fought and got it. We have to expose the BJP’s ‘one nation, one election’ idea. Slowly, they want to make everything one. Hindu and Hindustan, we agree but we won’t allow Hindi. We made Marathi compulsory; we had to do it,” he added. On the other hand, Raj Thackeray also targeted BJP saying that the decision to introduce Hindi was taken due to power, government. “If you (BJP led MahaYuti) have power, it will be in the Vidhan Bhavan. We have power. It will be on the streets,” he warned and reiterated that imposition of Hindi would not be tolerated,” he warned. “They just tried it out. Let’s first try the language to see if Mumbai can be separated, if Maharashtra remains peaceful then we will try it later, if we have the courage, then we should show Maharashtra and Mumbai by joining hands,” declared Raj Thackeray. In the days to come, Thackeray brothers will have to chalk out a clear roadmap for continuing unity assuring the ranks and file that they would not any accept compromise and do political adjustments not only on Marathi language issue but also on others including safeguarding interests of Maharashtra. In the case of Uddhav Thackeray, he will have to ensure clean and scam free administration of the BMC while countering BJP’s repeated allegations of misrule of Thackeray led party in the past. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who has downplayed the reunion between Thackeray brothers, has hit out at Uddhav sparing Raj Thackeray in his criticism. He has thereby not ruled out reaching out to Raj again to bring him in the MahaYuti. Uddhav will be under BJP’s scanner. “Everyone has seen the way we have changed the face of Mumbai under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his (Uddhav Thackeray) time, the Marathi people of Mumbai were exiled. They are jealous that we gave houses to the Marathi people of BDD Chawl, Abhyudaya Nagar, Patra Chawl in the same place. Whether it is the Marathi people of Mumbai or Non Marathi, everyone is with us. We are Marathi, we are proud to be Marathi. We are Hindutva supporters. We are proud to be Hindus,” declared Fadnavis. In nutshell, Thackeray brothers will have to start a fresh to prove their joint leadership and gain supremacy in Mumbai while for BJP led MahaYuti it is an opportunity to continue victory march after stellar performance in the assembly elections. BJP will use all its skills to expose differences between two Thackerays and especially Uddhav Thackeray’s desperation to gain power. The ball is now in the court of Thackeray brothers to show their magic. (Sanjay Jog can be contacted at sanjay.j @ians.in)–IANSsj/pgh

Agartala, July 5 (IANS) Ruling BJP’s ally Tipra Motha Party (TMP) leaders would soon meet with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to discuss the implementation of the tripartite accord, signed on March 2 last year, party supremo Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma said on Saturday.

The TMP Chief Debbarma said their meeting with the Union Home Minister is very crucial as there is some frustration that has been prevailing among the party’s rank and file at the grassroots level over the non-implementation of the tripartite accord.“During our meeting with the Home Minister, it would also be discussed to curb illegal infiltration from Bangladesh,” he told IANS.The TMP supremo said that he discussed with Chief Minister Manik Saha about the non-implementation of the provisions of the tripartite accord.“The Chief Minister gave due importance to the sentiments of the tribal people and assured that he would raise the concerns of the TMP at the appropriate platform,” he said.Pradyot Debbarma’s statement came hours after party MLA Rajit Debbarma earlier on Saturday threatened to withdraw support from the BJP-led coalition government in Tripura over the non-implementation of the tripartite accord.”If MLA Ranjit Debbarma spoke about withdrawing support from the government, it would be out of frustration as a sense of genuine disappointment and insecurity is prevailing among the tribals in the rural and interior areas,” the TMP head said. After a year-long hectic parleys and after signing a tripartite agreement with the Centre and the Tripura government on March 2 last year, the then opposition TMP with 13 MLAs joined the BJP-led coalition government in the state on March 7 last year, adding a new twist to Tripura’s politics. On March 7 last year (2024), two TMP MLAs — Animesh Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma — were inducted into the ministry headed by Chief Minister Manik Saha. The TMP’s demands include greater autonomy for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and the development of the tribals’ socio-economic conditions. The TMP, though, originally demanded a ‘Greater Tipraland’ or a separate state for the tribals under Articles 2 and 3 of the Constitution. The ruling BJP, the opposition CPI-M and the Congress have been opposing the TMP’s ‘Greater Tipraland’ demand. The TMP contested the 2023 Assembly polls separately, but in March last year, after joining the BJP-IPFT coalition government, became the partner of the state government. The TMP and the IPFT are both tribal-based parties. The TMP became a political force in April 2021 after it wrested power in the politically important TTAADC, which has jurisdiction over two-thirds of Tripura’s 10,491 sq km area, and is home to over 12,16,000 people, of which around 84 per cent are tribals.Tribals, who constitute one-third of Tripura’s four million population, always play a crucial role in the electoral politics of Tripura. The withdrawal of support by the TMP would not have any impact on the stability of the BJP-led government, as the saffron party enjoys an absolute majority with its 33 MLAs.In the 60-member Assembly, the BJP holds a majority with 33 MLAs, and its other ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), has one MLA.BJP leaders refused to make any comments at the moment on the TMP’s decision.–IANSsc/dan

New Delhi, July 5 (IANS) Maulana Arshad Madani, the President of the Islamic cleric’s body Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) before the Delhi High Court seeking a prohibition on the release of the film “Udaipur Files”.The movie slated to be released worldwide on the coming Friday (July 11) is a true story based on the Kanhaiya Lal murder case.In June 2022, Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Rajasthan’s Udaipur, was brutally murdered by Mohammad Riyaz Attari and Ghaus Mohammad by slitting his throat. As per the PIL, the trailer of the movie, released on June 26 on Youtube, is replete with dialogues and instances that had led to communal disharmony in the very recent past and carries every potential to again stoke the same communal sentiments.“That apart, a mere viewing of the trailer as released leaves no manner of doubt as to the plot of the movie as the trailer itself seeks to portray an entire community in a prejudicial manner, thereby violating the right to live with dignity for the members of the community,” said the plea, adding that the content of the trailer also deliberately makes references to the “sensitive” and “contentious” issue of the “Gyanvapi Masjid”, which is presently sub judice before the Varanasi District Court as well as the Supreme Court.Purportedly, the film also explicitly mentions the alleged controversial statement made by politician Nupur Sharma, which had resulted in communal violence and, in turn, the gruesome murder of Kanhaiya Lal.The petition stressed that the trailer, and by implication the movie that is set to follow, depicts verbatim the same content (comments against Prophet Mohammad PBUH) which resulted in widespread tensions as well as the registration of various FIRs against Nupur Sharma.“The trailer contains dialogues and narrative elements that clearly fall within the ambit of hate speech directed against a particular community of the country and the language, imagery, and narrative adopted in the trailer are not only inflammatory but deliberately communal,” said the plea. The petition also challenges the certification granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to the movie for public exhibition, claiming violation of Section 5B of the Cinematograph Act, 1952 and the Guidelines for Certification of Films for Public Exhibition.Praying to quash the CBFC certification granted to the movie, the plea said that the trailer of the film portrayed a deeply divisive and inflammatory narrative that vilifies an entire religious community, and the release of the film “Udaipur Files” has the potential to inflame communal tensions and disrupt public order, severely undermining the fabric of religious harmony in the country.–IANSpds/pgh

Bengaluru, July 5 (IANS) Commenting on the legal action against BJP MLC N. Ravikumar for allegedly issuing derogatory remarks against Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, Leader of the Opposition in Karnataka Assembly, R. Ashoka, questioned why no action has been taken against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who has repeatedly spoken disrespectfully against officials.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, he said Congress leaders have accused Legislative Council member N. Ravikumar of making derogatory remarks. However, CM Siddaramaiah himself spoke disrespectfully against an IAS officer, a District Commissioner, and a police officer, yet no action was taken.Ashoka alleged that no development work is happening in the state, and MLAs are revolting. He noted that the High Court has directed a CBI probe into the Valmiki Development Corporation scam, and Ravikumar’s statement is being used to create controversy to divert attention from these issues.Ashoka claimed that an FIR is filed if BJP members make mistakes, but no complaints are registered against Congress members. He criticised Siddaramaiah for addressing everyone, including the President, in the singular, implying that Congress operates under a different set of laws.He challenged Congress to clarify what obscene remarks Ravikumar allegedly made.Despite a series of heart attack cases in Hassan, the district in-charge Minister K. N. Rajanna has not visited hospitals. Ashoka said Siddaramaiah attributed these cases to the Covid vaccine, which was administered nationwide. He accused the government of making allegations against the vaccine instead of taking action. In Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Sakaleshpur, coffee crops have been damaged, but neither the Horticulture Minister nor the district in-charge Ministers have met the affected farmers.Ashoka said he would visit Hassan to inquire about the heart attack cases and crop losses, urging the government to act immediately. He criticised the government for focusing on discussions about who will be the next Chief Minister rather than development, stating that even after two and a half years, the government has not “taken off.”Farmers have demanded that water be provided to them first before releasing it to Tamil Nadu, he said.Ashoka accused the Congress government of betraying Karnataka farmers to maintain friendly ties with the Tamil Nadu government. He defended the RSS, stating that neither Indira Gandhi nor Rajiv Gandhi could act against it. He mentioned that former PM Nehru had sought RSS assistance to provide blood for soldiers. Ashoka claimed that Congress, even when in power, could not act against the RSS and predicted a “Congress-free India” in the future. The BJP leader asserted that a change in the CM’s position is certain, with Congress MLAs predicting that Dy CM D.K. Shivakumar will become CM.He pointed out that Shivakumar’s temple visits and prayers are indicative of this. He sarcastically remarked that before targeting the BJP, Congress should first resolve its internal issues.–IANSmka/uk
