Local residents in Afghanistan’s Khost district have accused Pakistani soldiers of attacking civilian homes, leading to residents fleeing to avoid the violence. Casualties have been reported in the region, although no confirmed deaths or injuries have been verified yet. Clashes have also occurred in the Gurbuz district of Khost, amidst escalating tensions between Islamabad and Kabul due to Pakistani airstrikes in Afghanistan.
The ongoing violence persists despite diplomatic talks between Pakistan and the Taliban in China aimed at easing tensions and discussing a potential ceasefire. The situation raises doubts about the effectiveness of diplomacy in resolving the conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Participants at a ‘Pakistan-Afghanistan Peace Jirga’ in Peshawar called for an end to border clashes and urged both governments to resolve their disputes through dialogue.
Political, religious leaders, and representatives from various sectors attending the jirga emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions, given the shared religious and cultural heritage between Pakistan and Afghanistan. They expressed concerns over the escalating conflict and highlighted the potential dire consequences for both nations if tensions continue. The participants issued a joint declaration urging an immediate ceasefire and emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and understanding in achieving sustainable peace.
