Peoples Conference (PC) president and MLA Sajad Gani Lone highlighted similarities between the recent attack on former chief minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah and his father’s assassination. In an impassioned speech at the J&K legislative assembly, Lone criticized the politicization of security measures and called for accountability in such cases.
Lone praised Dr. Farooq Abdullah’s contributions to Kashmiri politics, expressing disappointment that the identity of his rescuer remains unknown. He urged the government to acknowledge the unnamed individual’s bravery with a civilian award before the incident fades from public memory.
Reflecting on the history of violence in the region, Lone mentioned the sacrifices made by various legislators, including his father and the father of fellow minister Sakina Itoo. He emphasized the lasting impact of such tragic events, stating that the memories of violence never truly fade away.
Lone raised concerns about the misuse of security measures for political gains, citing his father’s assassination as an example of security failures driven by political motives. He questioned the ethics of denying security to individuals based on ideological differences, emphasizing the need for a transparent and unbiased security framework.
Acknowledging the return of Farooq Abdullah, Lone expressed gratitude towards Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s family. He contrasted his own loss with the fortunate return of Farooq Abdullah, highlighting the importance of preserving experienced leaders like him in the region.
