The PM-JANMAN Awas Yojana, initiated by the Indian government in November 2023, has made a significant impact on the Baiga, Sahariya, and Bharia tribal communities residing in remote areas of Shahdol district. Through this scheme, these tribal families have transitioned from mud houses to durable concrete dwellings, fulfilling their long-held aspirations. The program, specifically designed for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), has not only provided secure housing but has also raised the living standards of numerous tribal households.
In Pakariya village, members of the Baiga tribe have witnessed a remarkable change in their living conditions since joining the scheme. Formerly residing in vulnerable mud structures that posed challenges during monsoon seasons, these families now enjoy the comfort and safety of permanent homes. Beneficiaries like Gaukaran Baiga have utilized the scheme’s financial assistance of ₹200,000 to construct sturdy concrete houses, expressing deep appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this transformative initiative.
Vishwanath Baiga, another beneficiary, shared the difficulties faced while living in a mud house and expressed gratitude for the government’s welfare measures. His daughter, Lakshmi Baiga, highlighted the relief of moving from a leaky makeshift house to a concrete one, which has positively impacted her studies. Chandrika Baiga and Tejbali Baiga, also beneficiaries of the scheme, emphasized the significant improvements in their living conditions after transitioning from fragile dwellings to permanent houses.
Deepak Patel, the Block Coordinator overseeing PM-JANMAN Awaas Yojana in the Budhar Janpad Panchayat of Shahdol district, outlined the scheme’s objective of providing tribal families with secure housing. Within the Budhar Janpad area, over 2,000 beneficiaries have been enrolled, with a majority already residing in their completed houses. The initiative prioritizes tribal communities like Baiga, Sahariya, and Bharia tribes, aiming to enhance their socio-economic well-being through various essential interventions and facilities.
