In a significant move to bolster energy collaboration, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Vice President JD Vance convened in Paris on February 11, 2025. The discussion centered on how the United States can assist India in diversifying its energy sourcing through investments in clean and reliable US nuclear technology.

Meeting on the Sidelines of AI Summit

This meeting took place on the sidelines of an artificial intelligence summit in Paris and precedes Prime Minister Modi’s scheduled visit to the United States later this week. The upcoming visit is anticipated to cover a broad spectrum of topics, including trade, investment, technology, and immigration.

India’s Push for Nuclear Energy Reforms

A pivotal point of discussion was India’s recent proposal to amend its nuclear liability law to attract foreign and private investments in the nuclear sector. The stringent liabilities imposed by India’s Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act of 2010 have previously impeded the implementation of an India-US nuclear deal, which envisioned the participation of US power plant manufacturers such as General Electric and Westinghouse.

White House Highlights Key Areas of Cooperation

The White House, in an official statement, highlighted the mutual interests discussed during the meeting. It emphasized the potential for the United States to support India in diversifying its energy portfolio through investments in US nuclear technology. Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi shared on social media that he and Vice President Vance “had a great conversation on various subjects.”

Strategic US-India Partnership Strengthens

This engagement underscores the deepening strategic partnership between India and the United States. Analysts note that Washington has long viewed India as a counterbalance to China’s growing global influence. The collaboration in the energy sector, particularly in nuclear technology, is seen as a testament to the strengthening ties between the two nations.

Modi-Trump Call Sets the Stage for Future Talks

In the broader context of US-India relations, Prime Minister Modi and President Donald Trump had a conversation in late January after President Trump assumed office for his second term. During this call, President Trump emphasized the importance of India purchasing more American-made security equipment and advancing towards a fair bilateral trading relationship.

Path Ahead: Strengthening Energy & Trade Ties

As Prime Minister Modi prepares for his upcoming visit to the United States, the discussions initiated in Paris set a positive tone for future collaborations. The focus on diversifying India’s energy sourcing not only aims to strengthen energy security but also aligns with global efforts towards sustainable and clean energy solutions.

The evolving dynamics of US-India relations, marked by mutual interests in energy, trade, and technology, reflect a shared commitment to addressing global challenges and fostering economic growth. The recent dialogue between Prime Minister Modi and Vice President Vance is a significant step in this ongoing partnership, promising a future of enhanced cooperation and shared prosperity.
