A police complaint has been lodged against actor-politician Vijay and folk singer Velmurugan for allegedly mocking a devotional song dedicated to Lord Murugan during the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s third anniversary celebrations. The complaint, filed by Advocate Kutrala Nathan with the Nellai Municipal Police, accuses Velmurugan of distorting the lyrics of the popular Murugan devotional song ‘Maruthamalai Mamaniye’ at the event held in Chennai. The complaint also implicates Vijay, TVK general secretary N. Anand, and party functionary Aadhav Arjuna in the incident.
The complaint alleges that Velmurugan replaced a traditional lyric with politically charged words praising Vijay and TVK, causing offense to Murugan devotees and trivializing a sacred hymn. It further claims that the altered rendition was performed with political motives, blending religion with partisan propaganda. The petition warns that such actions could incite communal disharmony, offend religious sentiments, and lead to law and order problems.
“As Murugan devotees, we are deeply saddened by the distortion of a revered hymn for political purposes,” stated the advocate in the complaint. Vijay founded TVK in 2024 and has been actively involved in Tamil Nadu politics, commencing his first Assembly election campaign from Tiruchirappalli. Following a previous controversy at a TVK public meeting in Karur, Vijay briefly paused his campaign before resuming political engagements. The recent anniversary event, featuring a musical performance by Velmurugan, has sparked criticism and legal repercussions from some Murugan devotees.
Police authorities have not yet confirmed the formal registration of a case, and there has been no official response from Vijay, Velmurugan, or the TVK leadership regarding the complaint.
