In a tragic incident at the Shahdol Police Lines reserve centre in Madhya Pradesh, a 29-year-old police constable, identified as Constable Shishir Singh Rajput, took his own life by shooting himself with his service rifle while on guard duty. The constable was on quarter guard duty when the incident occurred around 1.25 a.m. Preliminary reports suggest that Rajput shot himself near the neck/chin area with his service rifle, resulting in immediate death at the scene, as confirmed by Raghvendra Tiwari, in-charge of the Kotwali police station.
Police investigations revealed that the constable was involved in a mobile phone conversation shortly before the tragic event. Reports indicate that an argument or intense emotional distress during the call led him to throw his phone to the ground in anger, followed by the fatal self-inflicted gunshot. The sound of the gunshot alerted nearby police personnel who were sleeping, prompting them to quickly respond and inform senior officers.
Upon notification, the Kotwali police and higher-ranking officials arrived at the scene, gathered evidence including the shattered mobile phone, and launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the suicide. Rajput, who had joined the police force in 2013 on compassionate grounds after his father’s passing, was regularized as a constable in 2015 and was currently stationed in Shahdol. He is survived by his mother and three sisters.
Authorities are conducting legal procedures, such as post-mortem examinations and further inquiries, to uncover any underlying factors contributing to this unfortunate incident. The incident sheds light once again on the issue of police suicides, often associated with work-related stress, personal problems, or mental health challenges, emphasizing the importance of improved counseling and support systems within law enforcement agencies.
