On August 6, 2024, President Droupadi Murmu was awarded the Companion of the Order of Fiji, the highest civilian honor from Fiji, during her two-day visit to the island nation. This accolade highlights the strong friendship between India and Fiji and underscores India’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s growth.

President Murmu received the award from Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, following in the footsteps of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was similarly honored in 2023. During her visit, President Murmu addressed the Fijian Parliament, emphasizing the shared values of democracy, diversity, and human rights between the two nations.

In her speech, President Murmu praised Fiji’s cultural richness and its role as a peaceful beacon in a world often plagued by conflict. She expressed India’s readiness to collaborate with Fiji to strengthen bilateral ties and support development projects, including a new Super Specialty Cardiology Hospital in Suva.

The visit also included discussions on enhancing cooperation and witnessing the progress of the ‘Solarisation of Heads of State Residences’ project, an initiative led by India. President Murmu’s trip, which will extend to New Zealand and Timor-Leste, reflects India’s Act East Policy and aims to deepen ties with key Pacific nations.
