In Dharwad, Karnataka, an accused individual under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act reportedly made threatening calls to a minor victim from inside prison. The case, which surfaced recently, has sparked concerns as the victim and accused come from different communities. A video of the interaction, where the accused demanded the victim’s support during court proceedings, went viral on social media, raising serious security issues.
Authorities revealed that the accused used a mobile phone to video call the victim from Dharwad Central Jail, displaying her name on his hand and pressuring her to testify in his favor. The accused also allegedly threatened the minor with consequences similar to a past tragic incident involving a college student in Hubballi. The victim’s family has expressed outrage over the breach of security and is demanding immediate action.
Following protests by activists, the accused has been transferred to Vijayapura prison, leading to debates on the illegal presence of mobile phones in correctional facilities and the negligence of jail authorities. The victim’s family has provided evidence of the accused’s video call, emphasizing the severity of the situation. Another case involving a man released on bail after assaulting a minor victim has also raised concerns about threats and assaults post-release, highlighting the need for stricter measures to protect victims.
