Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Mindy Kaling’s collaboration in backing the short film Anuja has led to an exciting nomination at the 97th Academy Awards. The film, which has earned a nod for Best Live Action Short Film, tells a touching story of resilience and familial love.

Directed by Adam J. Graves, Anuja highlights the struggles of a nine-year-old girl working in a garment factory with her sister. Set against the backdrop of challenging socio-economic conditions, it delves into themes of sisterhood, love, and the strength of family. The short is produced in partnership with Salaam Baalak Trust India, Shine Global, and Netflix, ensuring a blend of local authenticity and global reach.

The nomination was announced on January 23, 2025, by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott. This recognition places Anuja alongside other films in the same category, such as Alien, I’m Not a Robot, The Last Ranger, and A Man Who Would Not Remain Silent. With such a prestigious acknowledgment, Anuja is now set to compete for an Oscar on March 30, 2025, in Los Angeles.

Priyanka Chopra, known for her dedication to authentic storytelling, described the nomination as “an incredible moment.” She further emphasized how the film beautifully illustrates the power of storytelling in conveying essential themes like love and resilience. For Chopra, this project is a testament to the impact stories can have in connecting people across diverse experiences.

Mindy Kaling, equally proud of the nomination, took to social media to share her excitement. She highlighted the film’s essence—depicting the bond of sisterhood and the hope that persists through difficult circumstances. Kaling expressed her admiration for the brilliant filmmakers and young actresses Sajda Pathan and Ananya Shanbhag, whose performances brought the emotional depth of Anuja to life.

Guneet Monga Kapoor, the Academy Award-winning producer, also expressed her pride in the film’s Oscar recognition. She noted that the story of Anuja resonates deeply, not only for the poignant struggles it portrays but also because it reflects the global resilience of children facing hardships.

The story of Anuja holds a universal appeal, making it a powerful contender in the short film category. As it prepares for its big moment at the Oscars, it serves as a reminder of how art can shine a light on the most pressing human experiences, resonating with audiences worldwide.

With this nomination, Anuja is poised to leave a significant mark at the upcoming Academy Awards, underscoring the importance of diverse voices in storytelling. As the world eagerly awaits the Oscars, the film’s journey from a heartfelt story to global recognition highlights the increasing impact of inclusive and powerful narratives in cinema.

The Oscars ceremony will take place on March 30, 2025, in Los Angeles, where Anuja will compete for the prestigious honor.
