Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence Wing, in collaboration with Chandigarh Police, has successfully resolved the Chandigarh grenade attack case on the BJP office by apprehending five suspects. Among the seized items were a hand grenade, a .30 bore Zigana pistol, and ammunition, as confirmed by State Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav. The arrested individuals are Balwinder Lal alias Shami, Jasvir Singh alias Jassi, Charanjit Singh alias Channi, Rubal Chauhan, and Mandeep alias Abhijot Sharma.
DGP Yadav disclosed that initial investigations indicate the involvement of the ISI from Pakistan, with the operation being overseen by foreign-based handlers in Portugal and Germany. The suspects were part of a structured network with various cutouts and sub-modules to carry out the attack. Two key perpetrators have also been identified in connection with the incident.
Ongoing investigations aim to establish the full scope of connections related to the case. The grenade attack outside the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Chandigarh was reportedly orchestrated by the arrested individuals. Assistant Inspector General (State Special Operations Cell), Deepak Pareek, shared that the suspects were responsible for transporting a consignment comprising grenades, arms, and cartridges, which were then distributed through multiple operatives before reaching the final perpetrators.
According to Pareek, under the guidance of a handler based in Portugal, the accused coordinated the delivery and execution of the attack. Police teams are actively pursuing the absconding individuals involved in the attack through various raids. An FIR dated April 3 has been filed under relevant sections of the Arms Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in Mohali.
