Following Spanish badminton legend Carolina Marin’s retirement announcement, PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist and Marin’s long-time rival, shared a heartfelt tribute. Marin, a Rio Olympic gold medallist and three-time world champion, cited lingering effects of a severe injury from Paris 2024 for her decision to retire. Despite battling knee injuries in her later career, Marin staged a remarkable comeback, reaching the World Championships final and a likely Olympic final in 2024 before a heartbreaking exit due to injury.

PV Sindhu reminisced about her intense on-court battles with Marin, acknowledging their transformation from fierce competitors to friends. She recalled their memorable encounters, including a dramatic 2016 Olympic final that captivated fans worldwide with its physicality and intensity. Sindhu also shared anecdotes of their clashes, highlighting a verbal duel during the 2023 Denmark Open semifinal that led to both players receiving yellow cards.

Reflecting on the camaraderie among their generation of female badminton players, Sindhu expressed gratitude for the unique bond they shared. She praised Marin’s skills, speed, and fighting spirit while acknowledging the challenges they faced on the court. Sindhu concluded her tribute by thanking Marin for the battles, lessons, and friendship, wishing her a joyful retirement and acknowledging the impact Marin had on the sport.
