Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu’s run in the Malaysia Open BWF World Tour Super 1000 concluded as she was defeated by China’s Wang Zhiyi in straight sets in the women’s singles semifinals. The two-time Olympic medalist struggled against the world No. 2, losing 16-21, 15-21 in a match marked by crucial unforced errors, ending India’s challenge in the tournament.
Competing in her first event since recovering from a foot injury that had kept her out since October last year, Sindhu displayed early promise but couldn’t maintain the pressure. Despite taking a commanding 11-6 lead in the second game, she allowed Wang to stage a strong comeback, ultimately leading to her defeat.
Sindhu started the match positively, showcasing powerful strokes and utilizing her height and reach advantage. Her trademark cross-court smashes helped her take a 5-2 lead in the opening game before Wang countered with skillful net-play to level the scores. Although errors from Wang allowed Sindhu to move ahead 9-7, Wang regained control, taking a narrow lead at the mid-game interval as Sindhu struggled at the net.
The competition remained close as the score reached 13-13, with both players grappling for consistency and exchanging errors. Wang then upped the pace, launching a series of attacking shots and well-judged lifts to establish an 18-14 lead. Despite a brief fightback from Sindhu, Wang secured the first game as Sindhu’s shot went wide, setting the stage for her victory.
Sindhu began strongly in the second game, moving into a 6-3 lead and extending it to 11-6 at the interval by pressuring Wang into the corners. However, Wang surged back with renewed vigor, erasing the deficit as Sindhu’s mistakes crept in. With the score tied at 13-13, Wang seized the momentum, using sharp net exchanges to gain a 16-13 advantage. Sindhu’s challenges continued as she missed the backline twice, giving Wang five match points and ultimately securing her place in the final with another wide shot from Sindhu.
Despite the loss, Sindhu’s semifinal appearance marked a positive comeback following her injury layoff, providing hope for the upcoming season.
