Raja Krishnamoorthi Proposes January as Tamil Language and Heritage Month

In a historic move to celebrate one of the world’s oldest living languages, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) proposed a bipartisan resolution on January 14 to designate January as Tamil Language and Heritage Month in the United States. This proposal aligns with the Tamil festival of Pongal, a mid-January celebration emphasizing gratitude, prosperity, and community, reflecting the essence of Tamil culture.

Tamil, spoken by over 80 million people globally and 360,000 Americans, is among the world’s oldest languages, steeped in literature, art, and tradition. Congressman Krishnamoorthi, a proud Tamil American, stated, “America is a mosaic of languages, cultures, and traditions. This resolution recognizes the rich legacy of Tamil people and their contributions to our communities and beyond.”

The proposal garnered widespread support, with Tamil organizations across the U.S. praising this initiative. The Tamil Americans United PAC applauded the resolution, emphasizing the importance of celebrating Tamil contributions to modern society. They encouraged Tamil Americans to actively support the resolution to ensure its passage through Congress.

FeTNA (Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America) also voiced its support, highlighting that recognizing Tamil heritage will showcase the community’s cultural richness and foster deeper understanding among fellow Americans. Similarly, the U.S. Tamil Action Group (USTAG) commended Congressman Krishnamoorthi’s leadership and called for swift Congressional approval.

Organizations like PEARL (People for Equality and Relief in Lanka) noted the resolution’s significance in promoting diversity, a cornerstone of American society. By celebrating Tamil heritage, this resolution reinforces the contributions of Tamil Americans across generations while honoring the cultural vibrancy that strengthens the U.S.

Joining Krishnamoorthi in introducing the resolution were lawmakers from both sides of the aisle, including Reps. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Ro Khanna (D-CA), Shri Thanedar (D-MI), and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA). The bipartisan backing underscores the resolution’s importance in celebrating and preserving the cultural fabric of America.

By designating January as Tamil Language and Heritage Month, this initiative acknowledges the historical significance, cultural achievements, and contributions of Tamil Americans, fostering a more inclusive and appreciative society.
