Religious leader Karauli Shankar Mahadev, also known as Karauli Sarkar, shared his views on the recent controversy surrounding slogans raised at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He suggested that rather than labeling India as a Hindu rashtra, it should be recognized as a Sanatan nation. According to him, a Sanatan nation encompasses various cultures and mindsets, unlike a Hindu nation that may exclude others.
Delhi Police initiated an FIR following the circulation of a video on social media showing students allegedly chanting provocative slogans at JNU. The video depicted individuals associated with Left-leaning groups making inflammatory remarks during a gathering at the ‘Guerrilla Dhaba’. The slogans reportedly targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with the police deeming the content potentially disruptive to public peace.
The incident occurred amidst a protest related to the judicial custody of former JNU students Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid. In a separate statement, Karauli Shankar Mahadev condemned the unauthorized occupation of land near the Faiz-e-Elahi Masjid in Turkman Gate, Delhi. He expressed support for government actions against such activities, emphasizing the opposition of true Sanatanis to anti-religious behaviors, regardless of the individuals involved.
During a demolition drive by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi near the mosque, violence erupted as protestors defied police instructions and engaged in stone-pelting. The FIR highlighted that police had cordoned off the encroached land to prevent illegal occupation and safeguard nearby structures, including the mosque. Despite police efforts to engage peacefully, a group of 30-35 individuals reportedly hurled stones and shouted slogans at the officers.
