A Republican Congresswoman has introduced a bill in the US House of Representatives to allow the death penalty for individuals convicted of raping children under federal law. Congresswoman Nancy Mace emphasized the need for severe consequences for those who prey on minors, stating that there should be “zero mercy for child rapists.” The proposed legislation, known as the Death Penalty for Child Rapists Act, aims to send a strong message that perpetrators of such crimes will face the ultimate punishment.
The bill seeks to amend existing laws to enable capital punishment for aggravated sexual abuse of a child, sexual abuse of a minor, and abusive sexual contact against a child. Additionally, it would modify the Uniform Code of Military Justice to allow the death penalty for the rape of a child. The initiative is part of Mace’s efforts to hold predators accountable and ensure justice for victims of child sex crimes, including demanding transparency in cases like that of Jeffrey Epstein.
While federal law currently permits capital punishment for specific offenses related to homicide and national security, imposing the death penalty for child rape has faced constitutional challenges. Nonetheless, discussions on tougher penalties for sexual crimes against children periodically arise in US politics, especially following notable abuse and trafficking incidents. Mace’s bill will now undergo the legislative process, requiring approval from committees, both chambers of Congress, and the President’s endorsement to become law.
