Former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak recently took a break from political engagements to indulge in one of his passions—cricket—during his visit to Mumbai. On February 2, 2025, Sunak visited the historic Parsee Gymkhana in South Mumbai, where he participated in a game of tennis ball cricket, a popular local pastime. Dressed in a casual white shirt, black trousers, and sports shoes, Sunak took to the field, much to the delight of onlookers. He later shared his experience on social media, stating, “No trip to Mumbai would be complete without a game of tennis ball cricket.”

The Parsee Gymkhana, established in 1885, holds a significant place in Mumbai’s cricketing history. Located along the scenic Marine Drive, it has been a nurturing ground for many cricket enthusiasts over the years.

Following his game at the gymkhana, Sunak attended the fifth T20 International match between India and England at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. He was accompanied by his father-in-law, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy. Despite England’s defeat, Sunak remained optimistic, sharing a selfie on Instagram with the caption, “Tough day for England at the Wankhede, but I know our team will come back stronger. Congratulations to Team India on the win.”

Sunak’s visit to Mumbai was part of a broader trip to India, which included attending the Jaipur Literature Festival. At the festival, his wife, Akshata Murty, shared the stage with her mother, philanthropist and author Sudha Murty, discussing literature and their personal journeys.

In addition to Sunak, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, was also present at the Wankhede Stadium for the T20 match. During his visit, Prince Edward met with the captains of both teams and interacted with young winners of the International Award for Young People (IAYP), the Indian iteration of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. The award, founded by Prince Edward’s late father, Prince Philip, in 1956, promotes non-formal education and skill development for youth. The Duke’s three-day visit to India aims to strengthen ties between the two nations and spotlight the impact of the award program.

Rishi Sunak, born to Indian-origin parents who migrated to Britain from East Africa, made history as the UK’s youngest prime minister in over two centuries. His tenure concluded in November 2024 following a significant electoral shift, but he continues to serve as a Conservative Member of Parliament.

His recent activities in India, especially his engagement with cricket—a sport deeply ingrained in both British and Indian cultures—highlight his personal connections and the enduring ties between the two nations.
