Prices of roti and chapati have risen in Karachi, Pakistan, due to a severe Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) crisis, adding to the financial strain on the populace already grappling with inflation. Tandoor owners in the city have raised prices by PKR 5, attributing the increase to higher production costs linked to the surge in LPG prices, as reported by The Express Tribune.
Sajid Khan, the General Secretary of the LPG Association and owner of Karachi Gas, highlighted that there is no genuine shortage of LPG in Pakistan. He accused importers and market players of fabricating a crisis to inflate prices and profit through illicit means, despite conflicting accounts from locals.
Khan cautioned that this artificial scarcity could lead to further price hikes and criticized the government for its failure to manage the situation. He emphasized the growing demand for LPG amid the ongoing natural gas shortage and urged authorities to take action against those manipulating LPG prices.
Meanwhile, tandoor owner Manzoor Hussain noted that many tandoor owners in Karachi have switched to using LPG, resulting in higher operational expenses. He expressed that the escalation in LPG costs has compelled them to raise the prices of roti and chapati, impacting consumers.
