Rubi Kumari Thakur, aged 26, has made history by being elected as the Deputy Speaker of Nepal’s House of Representatives, becoming the youngest person to hold this position. She represents the Shram Sanskriti Party and garnered support from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and other parties to secure her new role. Thakur received 229 votes out of 256 lawmakers present, with her opponent receiving only five votes, while 22 lawmakers abstained from voting.
Nepal’s Constitution mandates that either the Speaker or the Deputy Speaker must be a woman, and they must belong to different political parties. Dol Prasad Aryal, also from the Rastriya Swatantra Party, was elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives on April 4. Thakur, born in 2000 in Mujeliya, Dhanusha district, hails from a modest background with her father working as a migrant laborer in Saudi Arabia.
Having completed her education in civil engineering-related studies, Thakur worked at an architecture consultancy firm before unexpectedly entering politics. Inspired by Hark Sampang, she got actively involved in his party’s activities and was nominated as a proportional representation candidate, leading to her election as one of the youngest lawmakers from her party.
