Out of approximately 19.36 crore rural households in India, about 15.82 crore households, which is around 81.71 percent, now have tap water supply as of March 3, as per information shared in the Rajya Sabha. At the beginning of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal in August 2019, only 3.23 crore rural households, accounting for 16.7 percent, had tap water connections. This mission aims to provide consistent, high-quality water through tap water connections.
The government ensures the functionality of household tap water connections provided under the Mission through an independent third-party agency selected using standard statistical sampling methods. According to the Functionality Assessment 2024, 98.1 percent of households in surveyed villages had tap connections, with 87 percent of them receiving water in the past week, indicating positive progress. The assessment also revealed that 84 percent of households receive water as per schedule, 80 percent receive the minimum 55 LPCD water, and most households are free from bacteriological and chemical contamination.
Various measures have been taken to plan and execute the Jal Jeevan Mission nationwide swiftly, including regular implementation reviews, capacity-building workshops, and field visits by a multi-disciplinary team for technical support. Operational guidelines, Margdarshika for Gram Panchayats & VWSCs, and special campaign guidelines for providing piped water supply in specific centers have been shared with States/UTs for effective mission implementation. Online monitoring tools like JJM–Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) and JJM–Dashboard have been established, along with transparent online financial management through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS).
