Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko stated that Moscow anticipates a visit from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a bilateral summit later this year. Rudenko emphasized the importance of maintaining regular and systematic contacts between Russia and India at various levels. Last December, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited India for a significant State Visit, engaging in summit-level talks and discussions covering defense, economic cooperation, energy ties, and regional security.
During President Putin’s visit, formal talks were held with PM Modi, where both leaders assessed the state of the India-Russia partnership, marking 25 years since its designation as a Strategic Partnership. The 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit followed, during which priorities for future cooperation were outlined in a Joint Statement. Key areas of focus included energy, nuclear power, trade, defense, and technology. President Droupadi Murmu hosted President Putin at a banquet in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
In 2024, PM Modi visited Russia twice, attending the 22nd Russia-India Summit in July and participating in the BRICS Summit in Kazan in October. The relationship between Russia and India has been enduring and pivotal for India’s foreign policy. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that since the signing of the ‘Declaration on the India-Russia Strategic Partnership’ in 2000, cooperation between the two countries has deepened across various sectors, including political, security, defense, trade, economy, science, technology, culture, and people-to-people ties. The Strategic Partnership was upgraded to a ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’ during President Putin’s visit to India in 2010.
