As the Indian women’s tennis team prepares to compete in the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group I event, Sania Mirza, a pioneer in women’s tennis, has urged the squad to play with utmost pride and dedication. The tournament is set to take place at the DLTA Stadium in New Delhi from April 7 to 11, with India hosting the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup. Sania Mirza extended her best wishes to the Indian team, consisting of Ankita Raina, Sahaja Yamalapalli, Vaishnavi Adkar, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, Rutuja Bhosale, and Vaidehee Chaudhari, emphasizing the significance of representing the country.
Often dubbed the World Cup of women’s tennis, the Billie Jean King Cup will feature six nations competing in a round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the Play-offs in November 2026. Alongside India, the other teams participating in the Asia/Oceania Group I event include Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, New Zealand, and Thailand. India aims to continue its momentum from the previous year’s impressive results in the Billie Jean King Cup Asia & Oceania Group I Qualifiers, where they secured victories over Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, and the Republic of Korea.
With the inclusion of New Zealand, Indonesia, and Mongolia this year, India is targeting a top-two finish to stay in contention for the World Group. The team’s focus remains on performance as they strive to return to the World Group for the third time. The Asia/Oceania Group I event is part of the Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge, with Regional Group I competitions concurrently held in Europe/Africa and the Americas. Seven teams from the Regional Group I events worldwide will progress to the play-offs, facing the seven losing teams from the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers in a round-robin format over five days.
