Two Indian American chefs, Sujan Sarkar from Chicago and Arvinder Vilkhu from New Orleans, have made it to the final round for the esteemed James Beard Awards, specifically in the Best Chefs category presented by Capital One. These awards recognize chefs who not only excel in culinary skills but also demonstrate leadership and contribute positively to their communities.
The nominees for these prestigious honors, which highlight talent and commitment to equity, sustainability, and community, were announced on April 3 during a live ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington DC. The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in Chicago on June 10.
Sujan Sarkar, representing the Great Lakes region, is the force behind Indienne in Chicago. His restaurant blends tradition with modernity, offering a sophisticated dining experience that elevates Indian cuisine. Sarkar, with over a decade of experience working under renowned chefs globally, brings a wealth of expertise to his culinary endeavors.
Arvinder Vilkhu, also known as Dickey, hails from New Orleans and is the president and executive chef of Saffron Nola and Saffron Caterers. With four decades of experience in the food and beverage industry, Vilkhu has established himself as a hospitality expert, infusing his cuisine with influences from both South Asia and Louisiana.
Both chefs have demonstrated a deep passion for their craft and a commitment to excellence, making them deserving finalists for the James Beard Awards.
