Fremont, California, will honor Shammi Rana, a passionate advocate for traditional sports, with the FOG Global Icon Award 2024. This accolade will be presented at the 32nd FOG India Day Parade and Fair, a vibrant celebration of Indian culture organized by the Federation of Indo-Americans of Northern California.

Mr. Rana, Secretary-General of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games, is recognized for his dedication to preserving and promoting traditional sports. His efforts have highlighted their cultural significance and their role in enhancing physical health, mental well-being, and community spirit.

Throughout his career, Mr. Rana has been a pivotal figure in traditional sports, notably serving as the Rapporteur of the Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on Traditional Sports & Games at UNESCO from 2017 to 2020. He has been instrumental in developing policies that support the growth and sustainability of these sports, inspiring many countries to revive their indigenous games.

The FOG India Day Parade and Fair, one of Northern America’s most anticipated events, draws over a hundred thousand attendees annually. The festival showcases Indian culture through fairs, cultural booths, and dance performances, bringing together mainstream Americans and the next generation of Indian Americans.

The event also features community support initiatives, including a Health Fair offering free medical check-ups and advice. Over the years, the festival has welcomed numerous Bollywood stars, adding to its star-studded tradition.

The Federation of Indo-Americans of Northern California is committed to supporting underprivileged sections of the community through programs like ‘Asra’ for domestic violence victims and free health sessions.
