Six individuals were arrested in Kolkata on the same day as Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar conducted surprise visits across the city to oversee law and order, as per police sources. Among the arrested, four are from Gujarat and were apprehended on theft charges in the Hastings area by the ‘Watch’ branch of the Intelligence Department at Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters. The arrested individuals, identified as Anil Ramju Salat, Dhiru Kalobhai Salat, Sameerbhai Salat, and Raju Kumar, are residents of Anand in Gujarat.

In a separate incident, two individuals accused of theft in a complaint lodged at Girish Park police station on January 20 were arrested in the Park Circus area. The arrested individuals, Mohammad Shahnawaz (alias Sunny) and Mohammad Sameer, hail from the Entally area in central Kolkata and are alleged to have stolen various items, including mobile phones and money, from a sleeping cab driver’s vehicle.

All six arrested individuals, linked to the two theft cases, were scheduled to appear in court on Sunday. Commissioner of Police Supratim Sarkar had recently emphasized the visibility of police patrols during peak hours in Kolkata, a directive he personally oversaw by hitting the streets. The arrests of the six individuals in connection with the month-old thefts coincided with his proactive measures.
