Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk expressed disappointment at the sluggish pace of talks between Ladakh representatives and the Central government. Wangchuk highlighted the delay in scheduling the next round of discussions, despite the revocation of his detention a month ago under the NSA, 1980. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to address the issues promptly to prevent further discord in the region.
The Ladakh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) have been advocating for statehood, inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, and safeguarding Ladakh’s land and cultural heritage. The demand for these rights escalated into violence in September 2025, resulting in casualties and injuries during clashes between protesters and security forces in Leh.
The peaceful protests turned violent as demonstrators clashed with authorities, leading to the destruction of property and loss of lives. Wangchuk, who was detained under the NSA for allegedly inciting violence, was released from Jodhpur Central Jail on March 14. His detention was revoked by the Union government to facilitate dialogue in Ladakh following the unrest in 2025.
