South Korea has applied for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status for its ginseng culture, aiming for a future application for the training culture of taekwondo, as announced by the Korea Heritage Service (KHS). The ginseng tradition embodies Korea’s emphasis on health and longevity, encompassing cultivation, processing techniques, rituals, and community practices. This tradition symbolizes solidarity and well-being, passed down through generations via practice and education.
The final decision on the ginseng nomination will occur during the 23rd session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2028 after evaluation by the UNESCO Secretariat. The KHS also revealed plans for the taekwondo training tradition, selected as a candidate for future joint or extended inscription. Described as a culture rooted in the “dojang” community, taekwondo values and skills are transmitted from masters to students and across generations.
South Korean ginseng, particularly Panax ginseng, is globally recognized for its quality and health benefits, often cultivated for six years to enhance its potency. Referred to as red ginseng after steaming and drying, it is a popular health supplement known for immune support, focus, and energy enhancement.
