Special voter registration camps are currently taking place in all 16 Assembly constituencies within Chennai district, covering a total of 4,097 polling stations. The purpose of these camps is to register new voters and assist eligible individuals whose names were removed during the recent revision of the electoral rolls.
The ongoing exercise is part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, which commenced in November 2025. Following the revision process, a draft electoral roll was released, indicating the removal of nearly 15 lakh names from the rolls across the district.
Officials have noted that approximately 1.50 lakh of the deleted names belonged to voters confirmed as deceased, while another 1.60 lakh entries were eliminated due to the inability to reach the voters or verify their current residential status.
A significant portion of the remaining deletions involved voters who had relocated to other Assembly constituencies, either within or outside the district. It has been clarified that many of these voters remain eligible to vote but were excluded due to address changes, migration, or incomplete verification during the revision process.
To ensure that eligible voters are not disenfranchised, the Corporation has organized extensive special camps at polling stations district-wide. These camps aim to facilitate first-time voter registrations and allow those whose names were deleted to confirm their status and apply for re-inclusion if eligible.
The special camps are being conducted at all 4,097 polling stations spread across the 16 Assembly segments under Chennai district’s jurisdiction. The deadline for name inclusion in the voter list is January 31, and citizens are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity before the rolls are finalized.
Officials have emphasized that these camps represent the final opportunity before the electoral rolls are concluded, urging citizens to participate. New voters, individuals who have recently changed residences, and those removed from the voter list are advised to attend with valid identity and address proof for verification. The final electoral roll will be published post verification, with participation crucial for ensuring fair and inclusive elections across constituencies.
