Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has scheduled an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) for April 6 to discuss and seek approval for proposed changes to the constitution. One major agenda item is the introduction of new playing conditions for domestic tournaments organized by SLC. Currently, team promotions and relegations in the top two domestic competitions are based solely on performances in the three-day format.
SLC aims to enhance the competitiveness of white-ball cricket by ensuring equal importance for all three formats. Bandula Dissanayake, the SLC Secretary, highlighted the issue of teams prioritizing the three-day competition over white-ball matches. The proposed system will consider performances across all formats for promotions and relegations, with the longer format carrying the most weight at 51%.
The restructuring also includes changes in point allocation for knockout stages in white-ball tournaments to reward consistency and reduce format bias. The team with the lowest tally at the end will face relegation, with three-day performances acting as a tie-breaker in case of points tie. SLC’s efforts to streamline domestic cricket have already led to a reduction in the number of First-Class teams, emphasizing performance-based competition.
