Sri Lanka’s Leader of the Opposition, Sajith Premadasa, expressed gratitude to India for its assistance during Cyclone Ditwah, during a meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Colombo. The two discussed India’s proposed reconstruction package for Sri Lanka post-cyclone.
Jaishankar also met with the Indian Business community in Sri Lanka, acknowledging their efforts in providing relief during the cyclone. Additionally, Jaishankar held discussions with various Sri Lankan ministers, reaffirming India’s support for the nation’s recovery and reconstruction after the cyclone.
Furthermore, Jaishankar assured Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister and President of India’s commitment to aiding in the country’s rebuilding efforts. He announced a USD 450 million reconstruction package for Sri Lanka, covering various sectors impacted by the cyclone, including infrastructure, housing, and healthcare.
In a joint effort with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, Jaishankar inaugurated a 120-foot dual carriageway Bailey Bridge in the Kilinochchi District, an area severely affected by Cyclone Ditwah. The bridge, airlifted from India, symbolizes the collaborative reconstruction initiatives between the two nations.
Jaishankar’s visit to Sri Lanka, under India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, focuses on Operation Sagar Bandhu, aimed at addressing the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah. The visit emphasizes the strong bilateral ties and mutual support between India and Sri Lanka in times of crisis.
