In preparation for the Republic Day celebrations, Chennai International Airport has put in place a strict security blanket. The heightened security protocols, effective from midnight, will be enforced until January 30. The airport has adopted a five-tier security system, which can be escalated to seven tiers during peak days from January 24 to January 26.
Comprehensive security measures involve various agencies working together seamlessly. All vehicles entering the airport are being thoroughly inspected at the main entrance. Suspected vehicles undergo detailed checks with the help of sniffer dogs, while bomb disposal squads conduct scans using specialized equipment.
Armed police officers are on constant vigil throughout the airport premises. Special attention is given to the multi-level car parking area, where vehicles parked for extended periods are meticulously examined by security experts. Additionally, commando units of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), along with sniffer dogs, are intensively checking sensitive areas like terminal buildings and the aircraft apron.
Passenger screening procedures have been significantly strengthened, including secondary screenings at boarding gates. Hand baggage is undergoing detailed scrutiny, and restrictions are imposed on carrying certain items in cabin baggage. Cargo and baggage handling zones are under strict surveillance, with consignments undergoing multiple security checks before loading onto aircraft.
Security at fuel stations has been bolstered with additional CCTV cameras and continuous monitoring from the airport’s security control room. Passengers are advised to arrive well in advance due to the enhanced security checks. Domestic travelers are encouraged to arrive at least one and a half hours before departure, while international passengers should aim for three and a half hours before their scheduled flights.
Despite the rigorous security measures, airport officials assure that all flight operations are proceeding as planned. Travelers are urged to cooperate with security personnel and adhere to the revised reporting guidelines for a smooth and safe journey.
