A Legendary Comeback for National Glory

In a move that has electrified the Indian football community, Sunil Chhetri, the nation’s most celebrated footballer, has announced his return to international play at the age of 40. Chhetri, who retired from international football in June 2024, is set to don the national jersey once again in the upcoming FIFA international window this March.

Strategic Decision Ahead of Crucial Matches

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed Chhetri’s return, highlighting the strategic importance of his comeback. India is gearing up for a friendly against the Maldives on March 19, followed by a pivotal AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier against Bangladesh on March 25.

Head coach Manolo Marquez emphasized the significance of these fixtures, stating, “The qualification for the Asian Cup is very crucial for us. Given the importance of the tournament and the matches ahead, I discussed with Sunil Chhetri about making a comeback to strengthen the national team.”

Chhetri’s Illustrious Career and Ongoing Form

Chhetri’s career is adorned with remarkable achievements. He stands as the fourth-highest men’s international goal scorer, surpassing global icons like Lionel Messi. Since his international retirement, Chhetri has maintained impressive form with Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League, netting 12 goals in 23 matches this season.

Fan Reactions: A Mix of Excitement and Concern

The announcement of Chhetri’s return has elicited mixed reactions from fans. While many are thrilled to see the legendary striker back in national colors, others express concern about the team’s reliance on a veteran player. Discussions online reflect this dichotomy, with some fans celebrating the news and others questioning the implications for Indian football’s future development.

Looking Ahead: India’s Path to the Asian Cup

India’s journey in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers is critical for the nation’s football aspirations. With Chhetri’s return, there is renewed hope and anticipation. The upcoming matches will not only test the team’s preparedness but also set the tone for India’s position in Asian football. Fans and analysts alike will be keenly observing how Chhetri’s experience and leadership influence the squad’s performance in these crucial fixtures.
