Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran suggested that the political landscape in Tamil Nadu might lead to a coalition government after the 2026 Assembly election. Dhinakaran mentioned the potential for his party to be part of the Cabinet if the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) assumes power.
Speaking in Madurai, Dhinakaran highlighted the view of many political analysts that no single party might secure a clear majority in the upcoming election. He stated that in the current political scenario, a coalition government is a realistic option, indicating the possibility of AMMK leaders being included in the Cabinet under the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Dhinakaran clarified that the aspiration for power-sharing was not a condition for forming alliances but a desire. He emphasized that any request for Cabinet positions aimed to acknowledge and reward AMMK members who had previously given up significant roles in the AIADMK government and party following the political split.
At the same time, Dhinakaran assured that the AMMK would not pursue a confrontational strategy. He emphasized a cautious and friendly approach to discussions, noting that the AIADMK understood their expectations would be modest and focused on capable individuals.
Dhinakaran also addressed queries regarding former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, expressing his invitation for Panneerselvam to join the National Democratic Alliance. However, he acknowledged the complexity of Panneerselvam’s legal dispute with the AIADMK leadership, respecting it as a sensitive issue.
Expressing disappointment over AIADMK members defecting to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Dhinakaran mentioned the departure of AMMK deputy general secretary S.V.S.P. Manickaraja to the DMK. He explained that local political circumstances influenced Manickaraja’s decision, particularly his desire to contest from the Kovilpatti Assembly constituency following AMMK’s alliance with the NDA.
Despite challenges such as these, Dhinakaran affirmed AMMK’s commitment to its alliance strategy and expressed confidence in securing a significant role in Tamil Nadu’s political scenario leading up to the 2026 elections.
