The Tamil Nadu BJP has urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to fulfill long-pending electoral promises made to the people of Kolathur, specifically regarding the removal of encroachments on water bodies in the constituency. A recent order from the Madras High Court has directed authorities to clear encroachments from Vannankulam lake in Kolathur, adding urgency to the issue. The court order came in response to a petition filed by Advocate Devaraj, a resident of Kolathur, seeking the removal of encroachments on nearly 350 acres of land in the Peravallur area.

The petition emphasized illegal occupations on Vannankulam lake, ponds, tanks, and government poramboke lands crucial for monsoon catchment. A division bench of the Madras High Court has instructed the Revenue Department, Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board, and Greater Chennai Corporation to swiftly remove encroachments on a “war-footing” basis. The BJP has called on the Chief Minister to ensure prompt and time-bound implementation of the court’s directive by issuing clear instructions to the concerned departments.

While noting improvements in Kolathur between 2021 and 2025 in areas like hospitals and playgrounds, the BJP highlighted unfulfilled promises such as widening Paper Mills Road from Perambur Church to Retteri Junction, pledged over 15 years ago. The party alleged that past regimes allowed encroachments involving political cadres and reminded of Stalin’s 2011 commitment to clear encroachments, restore ponds and tanks, and safeguard drinking water sources in Kolathur. Urging immediate action, the BJP appealed to the Chief Minister to enforce the High Court order promptly and restore Kolathur’s water bodies without delay.
