The final electoral roll for Tamil Nadu will now be released on February 23, 2026, as announced by Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik. Originally planned for February 17, the publication date was rescheduled in compliance with Election Commission of India directives following Supreme Court orders. This decision follows the Supreme Court’s instructions in WP(C) Nos. 1072/2025 and 1145/2025 dated January 29, 2026.
Acting upon the court’s mandate, the Election Commission has instructed the publication of lists highlighting individuals with “logical discrepancies” identified during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. These names are being displayed at various locations, including Gram Panchayat offices, public areas, Taluk and Sub-Divisional offices, and urban ward offices across Tamil Nadu. The objective is to ensure transparency and offer affected voters a chance to rectify any errors in their electoral details.
Individuals listed under discrepancies have been granted a 10-day window, starting from the publication date, to provide necessary documents or explanations either in person or through authorized representatives, such as polling agents. This provision aims to prevent genuine voters from being excluded without a fair chance to respond. The discrepancy lists have been published in compliance with the Supreme Court’s order, allowing affected individuals to submit their representations within the specified timeframe.
The final electoral roll, based on the Special Intensive Revision with a qualifying date of January 1, 2026, will incorporate corrections made after reviewing the responses received. The revised publication date of February 23 has been set to ensure the completion of this essential process. The Chief Electoral Officer has stressed that the revision process is being conducted transparently and in accordance with the law to maintain the integrity of the electoral system in Tamil Nadu.
