The Tamil Nadu Forest Department is considering delaying the third Nilgiri Tahr census due to the upcoming Assembly elections on April 23. The census is now likely to be conducted between April 28 and May 1, pending final approval. This four-day census is crucial for monitoring the endangered Nilgiri Tahr across various habitats in Tamil Nadu.
Preparations are already in progress for the census, with officials gearing up for the exercise post-elections. A specialized training program will be organized for the personnel involved in the census, focusing on modern data collection methods, including the use of a unique mobile application called “Varudai.”
The term “Varudai,” derived from ancient Sangam literature, historically refers to the Nilgiri Tahr, highlighting the cultural and ecological importance of the species in the region. Forest divisions have been instructed to nominate suitable staff for the census, with 177 census blocks identified across the state, covering critical habitats like Ambasamudram.
Scientific methodologies will be employed during the census, combining direct visual counts of animals within specific areas and the double observer method for validation. Previous surveys have shown a positive trend in Nilgiri Tahr population, with 2025 reporting an increased count of 1,303 individuals. Forest officials are optimistic that the upcoming census will offer valuable insights into population dynamics and habitat conservation strategies in Tamil Nadu’s hill ecosystems.
