Tamil Nadu is experiencing a notable increase in first-time voters before the upcoming Assembly elections, with a 33.6% rise in the number of electors aged 18-19, as per data from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office. The count of young voters has grown from 10.9 lakh during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to 14.6 lakh presently, indicating a significant shift in the state’s electoral landscape.

Moreover, the overall electorate has seen a slight uptick. Initially dropping to 5.67 crore post the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the total voter count has now expanded by 6.36 lakh to reach 5.73 crore as of April 6, the final day for nomination submissions.

This rise follows the inclusion of new applicants who filled Form 6 after the publication of the final SIR rolls on February 13, making these freshly enrolled voters eligible for the Assembly polls.

The surge in first-time voters holds particular importance as their proportion within the total electorate has grown. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, 18-19-year-old voters constituted only 1.8% of the electorate, which then stood at 6.23 crore.

Despite the overall electorate shrinking to 5.73 crore post the SIR process, the percentage of first-time voters has now increased to 2.5%. Officials anticipate this rise due to deletions across various age groups during the SIR exercise, leading to a higher share of younger voters. The substantial increase in absolute numbers indicates a robust youth registration in recent times.

Out of the 6.36 lakh voters added post-February 13, nearly one-third were first-time voters, elevating their total from 12.59 lakh to 14.6 lakh.

The SIR process itself brought significant alterations to the electoral rolls. Prior to the revision that commenced in October 2025, Tamil Nadu had 6.41 crore voters. This figure plummeted to 5.44 crore during the enumeration phase in December due to the removal of 97.34 lakh names, later rising to 5.67 crore post the processing of claims and objections.

As of April 6, the state boasts 5,73,43,291 registered voters, comprising 2,93,04,905 women and 2,80,30,658 men. Women continue to outnumber men by 12.74 lakh, maintaining a consistent trend. Additionally, there are 7,728 transgender voters, with Dharmapuri being the sole district where male voters slightly surpass female voters.

With a burgeoning youth electorate, political parties are anticipated to enhance efforts to engage first-time voters, whose involvement could be pivotal in a closely contested, multi-cornered electoral showdown.
