The Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department has acknowledged water supply challenges in the Athikadavu-Avinashi irrigation project this year. The project, operational since August 17, 2024, aims to rejuvenate over 1,000 waterbodies in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Erode districts by diverting surplus water from the Bhavani River. Despite an allocation of 1.5 tmcft of water this year, farmers have raised concerns about inadequate water supply affecting agricultural activities.
Responding to the issues, a senior official from the Water Resources Department explained that the project relies on surplus water from the Bhavani River. Due to technical problems like damaged pipelines and malfunctioning systems, around 5% of the waterbodies could not receive full water supply this year. The official assured corrective measures for the next monsoon season to address these challenges and prioritize areas with insufficient water supply.
Farmers have emphasized the need for timely maintenance and fair water distribution to ensure all regions benefit from the project. The government has been urged to take steps to guarantee equitable water supply and maximize the project’s positive impact on agriculture in the region.
