Telangana’s ruling Congress party has secured victory in around 60% of urban local bodies, as per the latest results on Friday night. The Congress has taken control of 64 out of 116 municipalities and three out of seven corporations. The main Opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has won 13 municipalities, while Forward Block has captured one urban local body.
There was a lack of clear winners in 38 municipalities, leading to intense political maneuvers by both Congress and BRS to attract independents and others for chairperson and vice-chairperson positions. The Congress party has asserted its triumph in 75% of the municipalities. Despite this, a strong showing by BRS prevented the ruling party from achieving a clean sweep.
In the previous municipal elections in 2020, the then ruling party TRS (now BRS) had dominated by winning over 100 urban local bodies. The ruling party has also clinched power in Mancherial, Ramagundam, and Nalgonda corporations, with a lead in Mahabubnagar.
In the 60-member Kothagudem corporation, Congress and Communist Party of India (CPI) have each secured 22 seats, with Congress leaders highlighting a friendly competition between them. The BJP, unable to secure any municipality independently, emerged as the largest party in the Karimnagar corporation, winning 30 seats in a 66-member corporation.
The BJP is also poised to become the largest party in the Nizamabad corporation, having won 24 out of 45 seats by 8 p.m. Nizamabad and Karimnagar are two of the eight Lok Sabha seats held by the BJP in Telangana.
